Mexico City

explore on foot

The varied neighborhoods and architecture of CDMX make this a city best seen on a foot. I was blown away by the walkability of this city, particularly surrounding many of the restaurants and bars listed here. It made it easy to fit in multiple stops on a night out. A few areas you’ll want to explore:

Polanco | This trendy shopping district puts Beverly Hills to shame with its upscale restaurants and boutiques. Post up on a patio here with a bottle of rosé and watch the stylish shoppers go by.

Roma | The namesake of Netflix’s stunning black and white film, and home to CDMX’s first expression of truly Mexican architecture- colorful homes and bustling bodegas.

Condesa | This hip neighborhood is sprawling with parks, cool boutiques and up-and-coming art galleries.

Juárez | We stayed in this cute neighborhood and loved all the shaded streets, little shops and cute cafes.

eat & drink

  • feast on colorful, vegan tacos colored with bright pink beet juice at La Pitahaya Vegana

  • bite into crispy, tangy pasteles de guayaba at Cafe Nin

  • Cicatriz Cafe has your caffeine fix for the mornings, and mezcal for your evenings

  • stop by Churreria El Moro for made to order, crispy churros and decadent dipping chocolate

  • bounce back with brunch at Lardo– the arroz negra steeped in coconut milk with mangoes is divine

  • Rosetta brings Mexican ingredients to life in a historic mansion in Roma, with floor to ceiling plants worthy of a greenhouse

  • Twice Michelin-starred, Quintonil is legendary- save a bit by dining in at lunchtime, which is every bit as luxurious (be sure to book well in advance)

  • find tuna sashimi tucked away above a trendy boutique, Loose Blues

  • cozy up at La Clandestina for late night avocado margaritas, the perfect creamy and tangy nightcap

  • enter through the refrigerator door at a late night taco shop to find Hanky Panky, a speakeasy with beautiful drinks

see & do

mercado de artesanias la ciudadela

shop for souvenirs handmade by artisans

castillo de chapultepec

enjoy the walk in the park on the way in, surrounded by colorful carts selling candy, nuts, and aguas frescas.

North America’s only true castle, Castillo de Cahpultepec is home to restored art, marble floors, massive chandeliers and stained glass windows are all beautiful– and the glorious views from the rooftop terrace and garden are the best in the city

museo soumaya

the incredible exterior of this museum hardly compares with the interior. The museum winds upwards and upwards via one long ramp, each floor more incredible than the last: Impressionist works free-hanging so you can see the backs of frames, intricately carved elephant tusks, an army of brass sculpture. Free admission here, and truly not to be missed.

peruse upscale shops nearby– IKAL sells beautiful artisan wares

Book a market tour at Mercado de Medellín (or visit on your own and fill up on tacos!) followed by a colorful cooking class & a long lunch under the blooming trees at Casa Jacaranda

Our long and lazy lunch in the late afternoon sun was the highlight of the trip — delicious Mexican wine flowed and conversation buzzed while we helped ourselves to the fruits of our labors – and made dear new friends who made Mexico City feel like home
